Sustainability Is Woven Into Every Stage

Follow our socks sustainability journey from how we pick our materials, how we minimize waste in our factory and how we limit our carbon footprint with our shipping partners

1
STAGE 1: MATERIAL

OEKO-TEX Certified Cotton

Every sock starts with cotton certified to the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 - tested for a constantly expanding list of harmful substances, so the dyes are safe for the people wearing them.

STAGE 2: PRODUCTION

Responsible, Personal Production

Our main facility is a family-run factory in Castel Goffredo, Italy, with generations of sock-making experience behind it.

Care for the People Making Your Socks

Regular SEDEX audits ensure our workers operate in safe, healthy environments.

Small Batches, Close Collaboration

Small-batch production keeps us close to the people and process behind every order.

STAGE 3: SHIPPING

From our factory to your door

Our custom sock orders ship with DHL GoGreen Plus. Through the program, we support the use of sustainable aviation fuel to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with air shipping.

STANDARDS & PARTNERSHIPS

Recognized standards for our materials, plus a program supporting lower-emission delivery.

Our cotton yarns are OEKO-TEX certified and tested for harmful substances.

We offer certified organic socks with responsible textile processing.

We use GRS-certified recycled wool for our Eco-Luxe wool socks.

Lower-emission delivery using sustainable aviation fuel.

LESS WASTE

Small Choices. Practical Changes.

From test socks to shipping boxes, we look for ways to use resources more thoughtfully.
Perfecting a custom design can leave us with 1-5 test socks per order. We collected 860 kg of unusable socks and cotton remnants for recycling into new products for donation.

We don’t package our socks in plastic.
In fact, you can often find our boxes lined
with Italian newspapers, if you want
to catch up on your European News!

We don’t prewash our socks at the factory, avoiding an additional water-use step.

Over 260,000 litres of water saved annually.

We use recycled cardboard boxes
made in Italy to ship out our socks.

We don’t wrap our socks in plastic.

Orders ship in recycled boxes, sometimes cushioned with repurposed Italian newspapers.

Our socks are not pre-washed
before packaging. This saves hundreds
of tons of water waste a year.
Prewashing socks is an unnecessary step
when high grade cotton is being used.

Do you offer organic socks?

Yes! Any of our cotton socks can be made with organic cotton. Our most popular options for organic are crew socks in dress or athletic. We also have our eco-luxe socks which are made from recycled wool.

How is Sockrates working to improve its carbon footprint?

We are very committed to reducing our impact on the planet. When we first started our custom sock exploration, it was one of the main reasons we chose to make our socks in Italy. The environmental standards in Italy are well documented as well as their ethical standards for workers. You can also read more about how we collect all of our wasted threads in order to make new products, preventing tons of waste from landing up in landfills.

What role does sustainability play in guiding product design?

All of our custom socks are made with sustainability in mind, and we are committed to making sure any new products we offer meet, or excel those standards. Our most recent example is our Eco-Luxe Socks which are made from GRS recycled wool, and we also offer DTG eco-friendly custom socks with recycled polyester.

What is Oeko-Tex?

OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 is a label for textiles tested for harmful chemicals. It sets the benchmark for textile safety, from yarn to finished product. Every item bearing the STANDARD 100 label is certified as having passed safety tests for the presence of harmful substances. You can read more about Oeko -Tex 100 here.

Why are custom socks a more sustainable promotional product?

Promotional products can easily become throw away products, which is what makes custom socks so unique. They have a very long shelf life (with frequent wear up to 6 years), OSFM options means that there are generally no unworn sizes, and they are made of 80% cotton which is a biodegradable material.

Are sustainable materials more expensive for custom socks?

Eco-friendly socks don’t cost more. The sustainability comes from responsible factory practices, which helps keep the price down, such as skipping unnecessary prewashing and recycling waste during production.

Can I choose eco-friendly fibers for my branded socks?

Yes! You can choose options like organic cotton and other sustainable fibers, including various eco-friendly materials, so your custom branded socks reflect both your style and your environmental values.
